Some retired staff of the defunct Nigerian Airways Limited (NAL), on Tuesday, appealed to the Federal Government to pay their outstanding pension entitlement. The former workers made the call in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. The retirees said that since the airline folded up in 2004, only 50 per cent of their five years’ pension was paid twice in 2008 and 2018. They, therefore, urged the federal government to pay up the outstanding balance, being the remaining 50 per cent for the initial five years that was paid in 2018 and the remaining years to date. One of the retirees, Oba Olufemi Ogunleye , the Towulade of Akinale in Ogun, appealed to the government to sympathise with the ex-staff of the defunct airways by paying their outstanding pension and disengagement entitlements. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has said that in terms of testing capacity for the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19, pandemic the agency had targeted to test two million Nigerians in three months. Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, Director-General of NCDC, disclosed this at the daily Presidential Task Force (PTF) Briefing on Tuesday in Abuja while giving an update on COVID-19 management in the country. “ The NCDC Laboratory Strategic Group has set itself a target of testing two million people across Nigeria in the next three months,” he said. Ihekweazu disclosed that the two million would come to about 50,000 per state which, he noted, was a very ambitious target. Mr Charles Odili, NDDC Director of Corporate Affairs, said in a statement in Port Harcourt on Tuesday that the scammers had collected money from unsuspecting Nigerians to obtain ‘fake’ agric loans. “NDDC is compelled to alert members of the public, especially those in Bayelsa and Rivers activities of scammers offering non-existent agric cooperative loans. “We have received several reports from some victims in Bayelsa, who were deceived into believing that NDDC was currently running an agric loan scheme. “The victims were asked to pay N6,000 as processing fees for the agric cooperative loans,” he said. A Bill for an Act to repeal the Quarantine Act, and enact the Control of Infectious Diseases bill, has passed a second reading in the House of Representatives. The bill which was sponsored by the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila seeks to empower the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and make it more proactive. Leading the debate, Gbajabiamila said that the (NCDC) had very little powers to carry out its mandate even though it is a body with great professionals. Gbajabiamila said that the Control of Infectious Diseases bill, sought to empower the NCDC to make it more proactive and not just reactive and function when there is an outbreak. He said when the bill is signed and becomes law, the NCDC will be empowered and may administer necessary vaccines to curb the spread of pandemics. The lawmaker said that the bill also seeks to make provisions relating to quarantine and make regulations for preventing the introduction and spreading of infectious diseases in Nigeria.
