FG merges CAC, tax ID registrations to improve ease of doing business

The merger is expected to make business registration easier for business owners. The Nigerian government has merged two separate processes of registering a business and getting tax identification numbers into one. The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) announced on Monday, June 29, 2020 that business owners will no longer need to separately obtain tax ID numbers from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) after incorporation. "Certificates of Incorporation of Companies registered under Part A of CAMA will henceforth carry Tax Identification Numbers issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS)," the agency said. CAC noted that the merger is part of the government's efforts to improve the ease of doing business in the country. Nigeria was one of the economies listed by the World Bank as having recorded the most notable improvements in the Doing Business 2020 report which compared business regulation in 190 countries. Lagos Doctors Extend Strike Ultimatum By Two Weeks

Medical doctors under the employ of Lagos State government have resolved to extend the 21-day ultimatum they gave the state government by two weeks before they embark on a three-day warning strike. The doctors, under the auspices of Medical Guild, had issued an ultimatum on June 4 on, asking the government to address issues that affect their members. The issues include; the state government’s COVID-19 response, salary disparity, shortage of doctors, and Medical Residency Training Act among others. Alleged certificate forgery: Coast clear as court dismisses suit against Obaseki

The re-election bid of Governor Godwin Obaseki has been handed a massive boost after an alleged certificate forgery suit against him was on Monday, June 29, dismissed. The Edo state governor has been embroiled in different lawsuits surrounding his eligibility in the forthcoming election in the state in September. Edobor Williams, Ugbesia Abudu Godwin and Amedu Dauda Anakhu in a suit with number FHC/ABJ/CS/553/2020 had accused the governor of forging his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) certificate in Classical Studies from the University of Ibadan. Wike Orders COVID-19 Tests For Govt House Staff

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Monday, ordered compulsory COVID-19 tests for all staff of the Rivers State Government House. The Governor, gave the order at the government house in Port Harcourt, when the Executive Director, BUA Foundation presented three ambulances to support the fight against the pandemic. According to a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim, the governor insisted that more testing be done to reveal more cases that were yet symptomatic to enable the government to promptly provide the medical attention needed by such individuals in the state. The Federal Government has extended the Phase Two of the eased lockdown by four weeks, but partially lifted the ban on interstate movement. Chairman of the Presidential Taskforce PTF on Covid-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, Mr Boss Mustapha disclosed this at a briefing Monday in Abuja. He said within this extended phase, there will also be a safe re-opening of schools to allow graduating students back to classes, while interstate movements would only take place outside curfew hours. Liberia re-opens its airport to air traffic

Liberia has opened its international airport to regular air traffic after it was closed to contain the spread of the coronavirus. BREAKING!!! Access Bank To Refund All Those That Were Debited Over CBN Stamp Duty

Access Bank on Sunday said it will refund its stamp duty deductions made from the account of its aggrieved customers after a social media outcry on Saturday. Stamp duty deductions apply to all credit received into current and savings accounts in respect to electronic transfer and teller deposits of N10, 000 and above. The money is remitted to the Central Bank of Nigeria. Brand Spur Nigeria learnt that Access Bank Nigeria has also promised to revert deductions made between Saturday and Sunday back to customers. According to a statement made on Sunday, the bank said it recognized that it is a tough period for customers. Stop Funding Police From Federation Account, Rivers Tells Court

The Rivers State Government has sued the Federal Government at the Federal High Court in Abuja to challenge the deduction of funds from the Federation Account for the funding of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund. The deduction, which its commencement was said to have been announced at the April 2020 Federation Account Allocation Committee meeting is based on Section 4(1)(a) and Section 4(1)(b) of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Establishment) Act 2019, permitting the deduction of 0.5 per cent of the total revenue accruing to the Federation Account and be paid to the NPTF. But the Governor Nyesom Wike-led Rivers State Government, has through the office of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, which filed the suit on May 20, 2020, contended that it was not the responsibility of the state governments but that of the Federal Government to fund the police. FG Evacuates 317 Nigerians From UK

The Federal Government has announced that 317 Nigerians including 9 infants have departed the United Kingdom for Nigeria on Sunday. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama disclosed this on Sunday in a tweet on his verified Twitter account. He disclosed that the flight, an Airpeace APK 7801 was delayed several hours due to operational reasons. Boko Haram Kills 10 Soldiers In Damboa, Borno

At least 10 Nigerian soldiers were killed on saturday evening when Boko Haram terrorists struck in Damboa Community in Borno State on saturday evening. The soldiers were on patrol when they were attacked and killed some metres from Damboa town. According to a resident of the community who spoke with Saharareporters , Lt Malgwi and nine of his soldiers were killed during the attack by the terrorists. The incident has since sent panic across the area with residents said to be fleeing the community for fear of another attack by the insurgents. Expert says drug addicts are more susceptible to COVID-19 infection

According to him, about 40 per cent of drug users in Nigeria currently do not have access to treatment facility or medical care. A Mental and Behavioural Medicine Specialist, Dr Kola Okunade, on Saturday said drug addicts and substance users were more susceptible to COVID-19 and other deadly infections. Okunade, made the disclosure at an event organised by an NGO, Adicare Rehabilitation Home, in Lagos, saying that use of drugs had been found to be weakening human immune system. Malami responds to critics over swearing-in of APC Chairman

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami says there was no legal impediment on him in relation to the administration oaths. Malami said this in a statement issued by Dr Umar Gwandu, his Special Assistant on Media on Saturday in Abuja. He said that working towards entrenchment of democracy and a democratic culture is not only a desirable responsibility, but a constitutional one, regarding the constitutional provisions and the demand for sustenance of democracy in the country. He explained that the office of the Attorney General exercises dual functions inclusive of that of Minister of Justice which is a political and advisory function, and administration of justice.
