Google brings Hangouts Chat, its Slack competitor, out of beta and adds it to G Suite with deeper integration with other Google and third-party tools (Frederic Lardinois/TechCrunch)

Hangouts Chat, Google’s take on modern workplace communication, is now generally available and is becoming a core part of G Suite. Hangouts Chat was first announced at Google Cloud Next 2017, together with Hangouts Meet. While Meet went right into public availability, though, Chat went into an invite-only preview. Now, Google is rolling Chat out to all G Suite users over the course of the next seven days (so if you don’t see it yet, don’t despair). For all intents and purposes, Hangouts Chat is Google’s take on Slack, Microsoft Teams and similar projects. Since Google first announced this project, Atlassian also joined the fray with the launch of Stride. Like its competitors, Chat is available on iOS, Android and the web. All of these companies are essentially riffing on the same theme, but all of them put their own spin on it. For Google, that means a strong emphasis on AI. The best example for this is probably the @Meet bot that helps you schedule meetings and the @Drive bot that

Apple says it will let developers making apps for Watch Series 3 track ski and snowboard activities through APIs in watchOS 4.2 (Joe Rossignol/MacRumors)

Apple has announced that skiers and snowboarders can use Apple Watch Series 3 to track their activities starting today. Apple Watch apps snoww, Slopes, Squaw Alpine, Snocru, and Ski Tracks have each been updated to take advantage of custom workout APIs released in watchOS 4.2 that enable tracking of specialized metrics: Total vertical descent and horizontal distance Number of runs Average and maximum speeds Total time spent Calories burned While not all of this information is available in the Activity or Workout apps at this time, some of the apps do have integrations. Ski Tracks, for example, features 17 different snow workouts that can earn credit towards Activity rings, while Snocru contributes active calorie measurements to the Activity app. The ski and snowboard tracking is limited to Apple Watch Series 3 models, which are the only ones with a built-in altimeter to track elevation. TechCrunch 's Katie Roof shared a closer look at some of the updated apps, which are no

Opinion: If we want an even better Lagos, then we have to become more ecofriendly

Lagos has a population of 20 million people, and it is one of the ten most populous cities in the world. This makes it a natural hub for commerce, technology and innovation. But just like the ten most populous cities like Shanghai, Delhi and Mexico City, Lagos also has a problem with waste. Since all Lagosians use and throw away things without efficient waste systems, Lagos is bound to have different types of environmental problems like overflooding and bio-accumulation unless we do something about it. It is now the rainy season. Around this time of the year, cars are driven through large amounts of water on the roads, and we all think it is a normal part of life because it’s rainy season; it rains too much. But in at least half of the main roads, drainage systems, though sometimes inadequate, are provided to abate these floods. Yet we still have a large amount of water that causes traffic, damages cars and damages roads. And why is that? Well, one of the reasons is plastic. Most con

Amazon Music launches in India as a free service for Prime members, available on Android, iOS, and the web (Akhil Arora/NDTV Gadgets 360)

Amazon Music has been given a full-scale launch in India, the subscription-based music streaming service that's part of Amazon Prime membership. You can now access it via music.amazon.in, or download the Amazon Music app on Android, iOS, Fire TV, Windows, and Mac. (There's no app for Android TV, sadly.) Previously, Amazon Music was restricted to users of the Amazon Echo smart speaker lineup in India. Notably, Amazon has used 'Amazon Prime Music' branding in some places, however, the actual service and apps are called Amazon Music. At first start, Amazon Music will ask you to select your music preferences by language: Hindi, English, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Gujarati, and Rajasthani. It'll use that information to prioritise what you see, but it doesn't act as a filter. That means you'll still see playlists from languages you don't select. If you've already been using Amazon Music on your Echo device, yo
